Lizzie Jelfs confident Magic Millions history can be broken

History is well and truly against her but racing personality and experienced horsewoman Lizzie Jelfs is confident she has the right horse in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Jelfs is the managing owner and syndicator of Invincible Woman through the Race With Lizzie syndicate, a $7.50 chance (with TAB) for Saturday’s $3m juvenile feature at the Gold Coast.

The Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans-trained filly made a big impression on debut, romping home by 2.75 lengths at Caulfield on December 14.

Jelfs, who wears many hats in the racing game, rates Invincible Woman up there with some of the best juvenile gallopers she’s come across.

“I’ve worked with some very good two-year-olds – won a Golden Slipper, won Blue Diamonds and numerous two-year-old races – but she’s as natural a two-year-old as I’ve seen and worked with.

“I couldn’t be happier (coming into Saturday), she’s been faultless all the way through,” Jelfs told Punters.

However, history says Invincible Woman faces an undeniably tough assignment at just her second race start.

“The only knock against her is the history. No Melbourne two-year-old has come straight here and won the race off one run.

“It’s the first time she’s going to be going this way under race pressure,” Jelfs said.

The last five winners of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic have all either been third-up or having their third career start and all of them were coming off a run in Queensland.

It is a well-established blueprint but Jelfs said the camp aren’t getting hung up on the history aspect.

“Lloyd (Kennewell) said you cannot worry about history.

“He thought the best way to tackle the Magic Millions this year was to make sure she (Invincible Woman) was going into it as sound and as happy as she could possibly be.

“It is different nowadays because Caulfield is now the (Victorian) Magic Millions lead-up – more suitable than the clockwise race (at Ballarat).

“She came up here and had the trial. If she hadn’t trialled up here I’d be a little bit more concerned,” Jelfs admitted.

Invincible Woman trialled over 800m at the Gold Coast on New Year’s eve, winning by a length with bigger gaps back to third and fourth.

Damian Lane, who piloted the filly at her first start, will ride again, with the pair to step from a middle stall in the huge field.

“It’s fallen into place quite nicely for us – we just don’t know how good she is,” Jelfs said.
